The new construction of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering in Garching near Munich covers a gross floor area of 124 000 sqm and 28 faculties. All areas of mechanical engineering, process engineering, aerospace engineering as well as a departmental library and a cafeteria are accommodated in the faculty. The teaching facilities are designed for 4000 students.
The planning of the technical building services for the test facilities – ranging from the turbine to the combustion engine test bench to the wind tunnels – presented a major challenge. Due to the project organization of the planning, which was particularly geared towards integration, the construction time – in contrast to other public building projects – was reduced by half.
New approaches were taken in the circulation paths so that there is a high degree of flexibility in the event of future changes in use. The media and electricity development of all central facilities such as the library, three lecture halls, six seminar buildings, shops, cafeteria, and a kindergarten are carried out through a “supply and circulation path spine” located under the main access route.
The entrance areas to the institutes were equipped with a photovoltaic system integrated into the glass roof.
