Besonderheit

The new building for the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering in Garching near Munich covers a gross floor area of 124,000 m² and houses 28 departments, including mechanical engineering, process engineering, aerospace engineering, as well as a partial library and a cafeteria. The teaching facilities are designed for 4,000 students.

A major challenge was the planning of the technical building services for the experimental facilities—ranging from turbines and combustion engine test benches to wind tunnels. Through a project organization focused on integration, the construction time was reduced by half compared to other public construction projects.

In terms of infrastructure, new approaches were taken to ensure high flexibility for future changes. The media and electrical infrastructure for all central facilities such as the library, three lecture halls, six seminar buildings, shops, cafeteria and daycare center is provided through a "supply and access spine" located beneath the main access corridor. The entrances to the institutes were equipped with a photovoltaic system integrated into the glass roof.
