The new building of the Fraunhofer Society, standing 65 meters tall, is located near the Mittlerer Ring in the southwestern part of Munich's city center. The new complex provides the opportunity to bring all departments of the Society's central administration together in one location. Transparency and openness were the guiding principles behind the design of this ensemble, which consists of three building parts.
The 17-story office building, an administrative structure on Hansastraße, and the five-story longitudinal block along the Mittlerer Ring seamlessly complement the surrounding block-edge development, creating an enclosed green inner courtyard. With its predominantly open spatial design, the building fosters a high level of communication.
This project is also groundbreaking in terms of resource-efficient construction measures. The offices in the high-rise can be naturally ventilated through a double facade, which was developed by the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems. Concrete core activation works in conjunction with natural ventilation and a thermal energy storage unit to provide night cooling. Additionally, this system, together with the installed combined heat and power (CHP) plant, covers a large portion of the heating demand. A gas boiler system is available to cover additional needs. At the same time, the CHP plant generates electricity and also serves as an emergency power generator. In summer, the CHP system provides process energy for cooling through an absorption chiller.
